What is gastroesophageal reflux
Gastroesophageal reflux is a disorder of the esophagus. When we eat
food passes from the mouth to the stomach through the esophagus. Between the esophagus and the stomach is a valve. This valve opens and closes. It opens for food. It closes immediately after it has passed into the stomach.
If the valve between the esophagus and stomach is not working well , that opens when it should not, it can happen that some of the ingested food to go back. In people who suffer from reflux happens just that. The food and digestive juices from the stomach back up into the esophagus.
Gastroesophageal reflux is this: the rise of material in the esophagus from stomach acid.
As in the stomach Normally there is a strong acid, the material goes back into the esophagus with acid reflux. And it is precisely the presence of acid in the esophagus that irritates the esophagus causing symptoms of reflux .
